YWAM - Australia Reef to Outback

Has anybody taken a guitar on a plane before? I need some tips about it because this will be my first time. I've seen people check guitars before.... :( but to me it would feel like checking an infant!! I am very protective of my strings!!!! Speaking of strings...i hear there is some trick about loosening them so that the altitude won't cause the neck to snap??? HELP!!! Any tidbit of advice would be SUper.

alright here's a travelling with a guitar 101. usually if you have a good case (hard case, solid clasps . . .) then you can check it as luggage. but depending on what kind of guitar you have, you may not feel comfortable with that. it all depends on what airline you're travelling on, but often times you can carry it all the way through to the gate and then once their, they hand check it underneath. a few times i've been able to put it overhead, but that's pretty rare these days. on your domestic flights within australia you could potentially be charged extra luggage for it.

and yes PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make sure you loosen the strings completely before you get on the flight. because of the altitude the strings will tighten and if you don't loosen them before hand, that much pressure could cause the neck of your guitar to break. so yes, you MUST loosen the strings.

hope that helps

Yeah, pretty much what Claypool said... loosen the strings (two or three complete revolutions of the machine head is more than enough) and carry it as far as you possibly can.

If you have a case with locks... make sure you carry the key on you, not in your checked baggage. They don't like it when they can't undo the locks, it turns out. But yeah... a good case is essential.... they get chucked pretty hard sometimes.
